Module 1: Lesson 5
Differences of the Uzbek and Turkish Languages
Although words may seem identical, their meanings can be different, even sometimes totally opposite in the two languages. The difference in meaning can be detected using dictionaries. Always remember to check and confirm with a dictionary. Look for extra meanings and usage in context.
Differences in pronunciation can be learned by listening to authentic speech and watching authentic videos. Also, you can practice it using an online pronunciation guide.
Differences in spelling can be learned by mastering alphabets. There are certain letters that belong only to Uzbek or to Turkish. Remember that corresponding letters may vary.
Cultural differences must be learned in order to speak correctly and appropriately in the target language. Always be aware of culture and cultural differences. Even if the words might be similar and have the same meaning, however, they might be inappropriate to use in some contexts. For example, in Turkish younger people can call older or unfamiliar people (after they become familiar and close with each other) "sen"; in Uzbek, this is impossible. Even though in Uzbek the word "sen" exists, it is rude to use it to an older person, even if that person is very close to you. It is seen as rude and impolite in Uzbek.
